Garden
Windows

Part window, part greenhouse. A garden window projects out from the wall with a glass roof, two opening side vents, and a sunny shelf — the perfect spot above the kitchen sink for fresh herbs, flowers, and a breeze. Our garden windows come from Vytex, the same factory that builds every window we install, and are available with the Vytex color options.

Understanding the Design

What is a Garden Window?

A garden window is a small box-shaped bay that projects 12 to 16 inches beyond the exterior wall. Unlike a traditional bay, it is built like a miniature greenhouse: a sloped glass roof on top, a fixed picture pane in front, and an operable vent on each side that opens for airflow.

Inside, a shelf or seat board runs along the bottom, and most units add an adjustable glass shelf above it — room for potted herbs, succulents, or a row of flowering plants. Because light enters from the top and three sides, the plants (and the room) get noticeably brighter than they would from a flat window of the same width.

Benefits of Garden Windows

More light, more air, and a place to grow things — a garden window does more for a kitchen than any other window its size.

Light From Three Sides

Glass on the top, front, and both sides pulls in sunlight from morning to late afternoon — a sink area ends up far brighter than with a flat window of the same width.

Built-In Plant Shelf

The deep seat board and glass shelf give basil, rosemary, orchids, or succulents a sunny, sheltered perch — fresh herbs within arm's reach of the stove, year-round.

Side-Vent Ventilation

Open one or both side vents to pull a gentle cross-breeze through the kitchen, clearing cooking odors and sink steam without running a fan.

Extra Space, No Remodel

Because the unit projects 12 to 16 inches past the wall, you gain usable shelf space and a roomier feel without touching the floor plan or the cabinets.

Wider Views

The angled side panes let you see up and down the yard instead of only straight ahead — handy for keeping an eye on kids, pets, or the grill.

Energy Efficient

Low-E glass, argon gas fill, and warm-edge spacers on every pane keep the extra glass area from becoming a heat leak in Georgia summers or winter cold snaps.

A Kitchen Focal Point

Garden windows add character inside and out, turning an ordinary sink window into a bright display nook that guests — and future buyers — remember.

Weather-Sealed Build

A properly flashed head, sealed roof seams, and an insulated seat board keep rain and drafts out — essential in Georgia's heavy afternoon storms.

What to Look For

Premium Features We Include

A garden window has more glass and more seams than a standard window, so the details matter. Here is what keeps ours bright, dry, and draft-free.

Low-E Glass

Thin metallic coatings reflect heat while letting light through — plants get the brightness they need without the sink area turning into a hot box in July.

Argon Gas Fill

Inert argon between the panes slows heat transfer better than plain air, improving insulation on every pane — roof, front, and both sides.

Warm-Edge Spacers

Non-metallic spacers keep glass edges warmer. That matters most in a garden window, where watering plants raises humidity and condensation forms first on cold edges.

Tempered Glass Roof

The sloped top pane is tempered safety glass, built to shed rain and leaves and to shrug off hail, acorns, and falling twigs without cracking.

Operable Side Vents

Casement- or awning-style vents on each side open with a crank or latch and come with insect screens, so you can air out the kitchen without inviting bugs in.

Flashing & Insulated Seat Board

A projecting window lives or dies by its flashing. Our crew ties the head and sides into the wall's weather barrier and installs an insulated seat board so the shelf stays warm and dry.

Perfect for Every Space

Where Garden Windows Shine

Garden windows are made for spots where you stand, work, and want a little green within reach — most often over a counter or sink.

Over the Kitchen Sink

The classic spot. The shelf sits right at counter height, so herbs are within reach while you cook, and the vents clear steam from the sink.

Breakfast Nooks

Brighten a small eating area with morning sun and give it a display ledge for cut flowers or a favorite plant.

Bathrooms

Above a tub or vanity, the shelf suits humidity-loving ferns and the vents clear steam. Ask for obscure glass on the side panes for privacy.

Home Offices & Craft Rooms

Turn a plain wall into a mini conservatory for orchids or spring seedlings, with daylight that makes long work sessions easier on the eyes.

Laundry & Mudrooms

Add daylight and airflow to utility spaces that usually get neither — plus a ledge for starting seeds before they move to the garden.

Know the Difference

Garden vs. Bay

Both project out from the house and both add light, but they are built for different jobs. Here's how they compare.

Our recommendation: Choose a garden window to brighten a kitchen sink or breakfast area and grow herbs year-round. Choose a bay window when you want a reading seat and panoramic views in a living or dining room.

Save Money Every Month

ENERGY STAR Performance

A garden window has more glass than a standard window, so the glass package is what makes or breaks it. Ours use the same Low-E, argon-filled insulated glass with warm-edge spacers found in our ENERGY STAR certified replacement windows — on the roof, front, and side panes — so the extra light doesn't come with an extra heating and cooling bill.

$101–$583 saved per year when replacing single-pane windows with ENERGY STAR certified windows

Up to 99% UV blocking with Low-E glass — protects countertops, cabinets, and floors near the window from fading

Less condensation — warm-edge spacers and argon fill keep the inside glass warmer, so the roof pane stays clearer even with watered plants underneath
